May 4, 1493: Line of Demarcation
A dispute between Spain and Portugal when Christopher Columbus returned from the Americas was solved with the Treaty of Tordesillas. The Line of Demarcation was created by Pope Alexander VI, feeling the need to solve the issue as Pope and so the two Roman Catholic nations could agree. The imaginary line designed the spheres of influence for Spain and Portugal: Spain could explore and conquer the Americas, the Philippines, lands touched by Columbus, while Portugal was given Brazil, east and west coasts of Africa, southern and eastern Asia, and the East Indies.
